Mittens for Standard Gauge Machines

Materials Required: Mary Lue’s Schuss Plus, or other wool yarn that will knit to required gauge. Most wool sport weight yarn will work. DK is usually just a little lighter weight, but should work also. This is a fairly tight fabric at this gauge; adjust the tension dial as necessary for the yarn you are using

Gauge: 7.5 sts, 10.5 rows = 1 inch in Stockinette
Tension: approximately 8-9

Children’s Sizes S-M-L (1-2, 3-4, 5-6)

Cuff. Bring forward 44 (47-53) needles, from 22 (24-26)L to 22 (23-26)R of center 0. Return every 3rd needle to pos A, leaving 2 needles in WP, 1 in pos A, repeating across. Cast on over remaining WP needles.

RC 000. T7. K even to RC 62, ending COR. Bring empty needles back to WP and hang hem. Fold up CO edge; *skip first needle, hang next loop on WP needle, hang next loop on empty needle. Repeat from * across. Inc 1 st at R for size M only; dec 1 st at R for size L only. 44 (48-52) sts now in WP. This completes cuff. RC 000. T 8. K even to RC 18 (22-26), ending COR.

Thumb. CO 8 (9-10) sts at R edge. Keep these sts, plus 8 (9-10) sts just L of them in WP; place remaining 28 (30-32) sts into HP and set carriage to hold. RC 000. K even to RC 16 (18-22). It may be necessary to bring the thumb sts forward just until sts slip behind the latches for the first 4 rows. Then hang a claw weight under the thumb sts to help pull them down. Transfer every other st to adjacent needle. Clip yarn, leaving an 8″ tail. Thread yarn tail into tapestry needle and pick off remaining 8 (9-10) sts. Gather tightly and fasten securely. Do not sew thumb seam yet.

Hand. Turn thumb section down toward cuff and fold inwards toward center of fabric. Pick up 8 (9-10) sts in the CO edge and hang on original needles. 44 (48-52) sts again in WP. RC 000. K even to RC 22 (26-30), ending COR. Place all sts L of center 0 into HP and set carriage to hold. Clip MC. Remove all sts R of center 0 on WY. Take carriage across to L and rethread MC.

Shape Tip
Short row method
Return needles in HP into their hooks with transfer tool. Always wrap first needle in HP to prevent a hole in the fabric. * Return 2 needles on side opposite carriage to UWP, K 1 row, wrap first HP needle. Repeat from * 5 (7-7) more times. 10 (8-10) sts remain in WP in center. **Return 2 needles on side opposite carriage to UWP, K 1 row, wrap first HP needle. Repeat from ** 5 (7-7) more times. All 22 (24-26) sts are back in WP. Remove on WY. Weave (Kitchener stitch) to MC sts on other side of hand.

Transfer tool method
Using a 2-prong transfer tool, decrease 1 st each side every row a total of 6 (8-8) times. Remove remaining 10 (8-10) sts on WY. Return other side to original needles and knit to correspond. More experienced knitters may prefer not to remove the first half of the sts onto WY; instead, place them in HP and set the carriage to hold. Make the transfer tool decreases on the other half, then remove the 10 (8-10) sts remaining for tip on WY. Return sts for first half into their hooks with the transfer tool and knit to correspond.

Kitchener stitch the tip, or rehang, knit sides of fabric together, and BO the tip sts. Sew seams. Whip stitch or overcast method is best, since it makes less of a ridge along seamline.

Knit other mitten to correspond, reversing all shaping (thumb should be on the left side this time).
